I started talking to a stranger on the train and eventually we got around to discussing religion. They said that before they decided which religion was their own personal fit, they researched all of the different religions and visited each place of worship and investigated theology. I accepted this and mentioned that I was leaning towards atheism, as I personally identified with the scientific point of view. They made a face and countered with “If humans evolved from apes, why are there still apes?” It saddens me that science is not accorded the same respect as other beliefs. If this individual deemed it appropriate to investigate all religions, why did they not accord the same respect to science? The answer to the ape question is quite a simple one. If the scientific equivalent of a place of worship were an encyclopaedia, the answer to that question could quickly have been found.
